Recommended System Requirements

The Passageways Portal runs on either an existing server or one you purchase new. To help you determine the type of server you need, please use the recommended requirements outlined below.  While we strongly recommend against it, you may run other applications on the same server.

Recommended System Requirements

Software

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6.0 or 7.0 on the server and all client PC’s.
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, 32-bit edition with Service Pack 2.
  • Microsoft IIS 6.0 Web Server.
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 on both the Portal server.
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard version. Depending on the server hardware selected, a single processor* license is typically all our customers require. For additional SQL Server licensing requirements and explanation please see the SQL Server licensing information on the Microsoft site. We also support the Enterprise version. We do not recommend the Workgroup version because of the built-in memory usage restrictions and we do not support the Express version because of the memory and database size restrictions.

Hardware

  • 2 GHz or higher single processor* Pentium-compatible CPU .
  • At least 2 gigabytes (GB) System Memory (RAM).
  • Hard Disk: 20 GB with 5 GB free space. Additional free hard disk space is required if you plan to store documents within the Portal server.

Network

  • Internet Access from Portal Server.
  • Connection to SQL Server if not on the same machine as the portal server.
  • Read access to network documents and folders from IIS Web Server.

FAQs

What about the x64-bit versions of Windows Server 2003?
While we have not formally tested the Portal application on the x64-bit version of Windows Server 2003, the Portal is currently running in a number of customer sites in the x64-bit environment.

Will the Portal operate using SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4?
Yes, however because Microsoft has discontinued mainstream support for SQL Server 2000,
we suggest that organizations using this version plan to upgrade in the near future.

Does the Portal support Windows 2000 Server Service Pack 4?
Yes, however because Microsoft has discontinued mainstream support for Windows Server 2000, we suggest that organizations using this version plan to upgrade in the near future.

* Microsoft, according to their website, charges the same price per processor regardless of the number of “core” processors that make up the chip. For example, a dual core processor and a quad core processor would require only a single processor license.
